DHH ON AI-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT

video

DHH's personal opinions aside, a pretty good discussion on how frontier AI models have fundamentally shifted an extremely productive and well known developer-pesonality to an agent-first approach. DHH claims that agents enable individuals and small teams to tackle ambitious projects previously considered impractical. While emphasizing that AI amplifies rather than replaces craftsmanship, he also argues we've hit 'peak software engineer'—the era of developers commanding premium compensation purely for implementation is ending. However, a new one is beginning where engineers who can function as both engineer and product manager will have many lucrative opportunities

bye, mom

substack

A raw and beautifully written essay on sudden loss and being present for her mother's death. Aella navigates the surreal, visceral intimacy of the ICU-the overwhelming physicality of love, and the devout love of a mother. She also accurately captures that weird thing time does during the death of a loved one. It just hangs in the air locking you from moving forward or going back. Only after burying them does the weight lift and time finally flows freely again. Anyways, the writing itself is extraordinary, and reading it really inspired me to think differently about my time with my own mother.

THE THIRD GOLDEN AGE OF SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

video

Grady Booch, co-creator of UML, contextualizes AI's impact by arguing we're in the third golden age of software engineering marked by rising abstraction levels. While AI accelerates coding, it doesn't replace human judgment and systems thinking required for secure, scalable systems. AI is an opportunity to focus on significant creative and architectural challenges. Really interesting conversation on not only the future of software engineering but also a deep look at it's past.

SPEC-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT WITH CODING AGENTS

course

A practical course teaching developers to move beyond 'vibe coding' by writing clear specs that guide AI coding agents to build intentional, maintainable software. Covers writing project constitutions, feature specifications, plan-implement-verify workflows, and custom agent skills. Taught by JetBrains Developer Advocate Paul Everitt. Can't wait to take it.
